About the show...

Combine the elements of a soap opera with a horror film and a slapstick comedy, and you might get something close to the Queanbeyan Players' production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Ruddigore.

In the fishing village of Rederring, farmer Robin Oakapple woos orphan Rose Maybud, until his sailor brother Richard, himself enamoured of Rose, harpoons Robin's chances by revealing him as the Baronet of Ruddigore.

An ancient curse dooms the holder of that title to die in torment unless they commit at least one crime each day.

Sir Despard, who has been baronet since Robin's presumed death, is now free to reform and resume his long-neglected romance with Mad Margaret - whose madness was caused by grief over their broken engagement in the first place.

Add a somewhat confused old servant, a professional corps of bridesmaids and a collection of ancestral spirits and the results are melodrama at its best, said director Norma Roach.

"This is one of the best Gilbert and Sullivan shows - beautiful music, comedic complications and convoluted relationships between some very confused characters," she said.

"We're fortunate to have a talented group of actors capable of both singing the libretto and wringing the best laughs possible out of a very funny script."

Among the cast is Rebecca Pope as the naïve orphan Rose; Lindsay Roe as Robin Oakapple, the true Baronet of Ruddigore; Peter Smith as Sir Despard, who was given the title after Robin's supposed death; and Sheena Smith in a not-to-be-missed performance as the comically insane Mad Margaret.

Ruddigore played at the Queanbeyan Convention Centre from 21 October to 4 November 2005.
